l own a 2005 Subaru Forester and lately it has developed an intermitant squeek that comes and goes.When it does squeek I've noticed that as l accelerate the rate of the squeek increases.l have nearly 60,000 miles on the vehicle and I've been told that it may need a timing belt at 60K.Could that be what is causing this annoying sound?What else might it be?

If you think it could be the timing belt, get it checked out pronto! If the belt breaks while you're driving, it could royally screw up your engine!

The timing belt is not due on an '05 Forester until 105k. At under 60k the vehicle is still under factory warranty; the squeak is probably brake noise or something simple, but bring it into a Subaru dealer to make sure it is not a transmission problem before your warranty expires. The diagnosis should be free and if it is a major problem it will be covered under warranty; if it is something else, you will know what it is and they should be able to fix it for you.

l think it might be a loose nut behind the wheel. Get a grip on yourself, straighten up, and drive quietly.

At 60,000 miles it is probably the brakes. They have a built in device to warn you when they need to be changed. It is a piece of metal that contacts the rotors and will squeak or chirp as the case may be.

It does sound strange but it could possibly be the brake system. The timing belt, if failing will be very noticeable, like total failure.
Even though you are accelerating, the brakes can drag the wear tab along the rotors causing a squeaking noise. If you have not already, go get the rotors machined and some new pads, that should quiet things down.

However, dirt in a bearing can cause a squeak too, so brake inspection should come before a full brake job.
