The light goes off and on.It does not stay on.

Many, many things can cause CEL to come on.

CEL should be renamed = ''please have the engine code scanned'' light.

But itself it means nothing.

Go to Autozone and have the code scanned (free). Then come back here and ask more question with the code.

One of the most common is a loose gas cap or having the gas cap off while the car is running.

It could also be an oxygen sensor.

It does sound like an Evap system code or random misfires which is common as it gets really hot. But like the guy up top said, there are about 300 different codes for things that can cause it so you have to see what code is stored to know for sure. The good thing is as long as it is not flashing, it is just an emissions related fault so chances are you are not doing any bad damage to the motor.
