How do i CHANGE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER IN A 1999 SUBARU FORESTER

remove pan bolts .drop the pan be careful leave bolts on one side why u drop the other side ur clothes will thank you.. then remove the pan ..remove the filter .clean the pan & magnet in the pan ..clean the pan gasket surface on the trans .install a new filter.put on ur new gasket followed by the pan than the bolts .. add some fluid not to much start the car wait intill the car is warm check the fluid level while car is running & on flat surface add to specied area on the dip stick

the transmission has a drain plug on the pan and the filter will be on the drivers side of the transmission, looks just like a oil filter but is a lot more money if the filter is not on the outside of the transmission you do not need the change it just replace the oil!

There is a big filter labeled 'transmission' it is external & can be accessed without removing the transmission.

the procedure is as follows:

1) raise the car
2) put a big pan under the transmission, remove the drain bolt & oil filter & drain the oil (this could take a long time)
3) replace the drain bolt (buy a new crush washer) & filter (buy a new filter!!!)
4) pump the oil into the gearbox through the gearbox dipstick. be very sure u do not overfill the gearbox.

alternatively, a shop should be able to do this for u for around $75 labor
