Subaru maitenance schedule calls first oil change on 3,000 miles, 2nd on 7,500 miles and after that 7,500 intervals. My local Subaru dealer says every 3,750 miles. Any ideas or input on this?

It should be every 3,750 miles. You will start to notice a definite drop in your gas mileage when it gets close to time for an oil change. It is best to stay with the 3,750 if you want to keep getting the best gas mileage you can.

l am not a Subaru expert but on my Toyota is that have 194,000 miles and 139,000 miles I've always changed the oil every 5000 miles. 1 it is easier to remember and 2 modern oil is not going to have any viscosity break down at 3750 miles or 5000 miles, The dealers like you to change the oil as often as possible so they can keep charging you for oil changes and inspections and any other thing they can.

It depends upon the type of driving u do. If u normally do suburban/hwy driving & it gets fully warmed up, then there is no reason to change it more than 7500 mi intervals. If u only drive 3 miles to work in the winter, u may want to change it more often because it may not have time to drive moisture out of the oil from cold starting.

The last Subaru l put a lot of miles on was a 1983 4WD wagon that l drove 139,000 miles its first 4 years around IL, W l & upper MI, including off roading & hauling firewood annually with a trailer. Other than its initial break in oil, l changed it about every 7500 miles & had no engine problems (other than leaking oil pressure sending unit that cost $60 to replace).

l own an 06 outback 2.5i. it has 75,000 miles that were 100% trouble FREE. l change the oil every 3000 with synthetic. You should change it more frequently than not, because oil will form into sludge if you let the interval go too long, and its cheap insurance to do it every 3000. By the way, mine goes thru 3 feet of snow.

If you're taking it to the dealer to get it changed they will say it is shorter to get more money from you. The manual will tell you what the correct intervals are. Only have to do it more often on the turbocharged models if you drive it hard. Oils these days are very good so if you use a quality filter they will last a long time. You only have to do what the manual says to keep your warranty in tact.

The info in the manual does indeed state those intervals..the first 3,000, & 7,500 mile services were considered part of the break in period, & the 7,500 miles thereafter was standard procedure on all new Subarus. The reason the dealer says only 3,750 miles, was due to a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) from Subaru, stating there were problems with sludge build up, & excessive oil consumption in cars that were allowed to go the 7,500 miles between changes, & some of the turbo cars (WRX, STi) were actually blowing turbos due to oil starvation/ clogging of feed lines due to sludge. So the dealer is correct; the proper interval for ALL Subarus is now 3,750 miles.
