Are they glued flat on, or do they have a post with a screw?l am not worried about the paint around them, just keeping the letters whole.

l believe most of those are glued on. Using a heat gun or hair dryer on it will loosen the glue and you should be able to pull them off.

Almost all emblems on Japanese cars are attached with adhesive. A little heat like hair dryer and a single edged razor and they come off quite easily.

Fishing line! Just floss it right off there, it works!

Heat it up good with a hair dryer and use fishing line to get the emblems off. Soak the leftover with Goo Gone or some kind of adhesive remover. When you get as much of it off as you can then use some clay bar and give it a good wax coat and you're good to go.
Done both my Subaru is and friends' as well this way.
