my 97 legacy has developeed a miss. i've checked and found that it is not firing on the #3 cylinder. I've replaced wires. i'm thinking maybe the ignitor or coil pack. Has anyone had this problem and what was the cause?

l would get it to a Subaru Dealer, but no, I've never heard of this sorry.

Not familiar with your specific engine, however, they all work pretty much the same. You need to check and see if you are getting spark to the ignitor? (spark plug). this can be done by finding a bolt that is small enough and long enough to fit into the wire at the ignitor? end and holding it close enough to the engine block without actually touching it to see if you get a spark. No spark, you need to replace the coil, spark, and you need to replace the ignitor?

try new plugs or go to a junkyard and get a used coil. l had to put a junkyard coil on my legacy and it works fine now.

Sorry but unless you wanna check and guess with different replacement parts, you probably will have to take it to a dealer or service center.

And fyi. all 97 legacies were H4s. The only car that you could get an H6 on prior to the Tribeca/08 Legacy/Outback were Outbacks since like 2000 l think.

Could possibly be a bad injector as well. When it is missing do you smell lot is of gas out of the exhaust? if so it is probably not sparking and just shooting the gas out. if not it could be the injector not firing.

First of all: Is it a six or a four cylinder model? Best thing to do is check ALL the plugs & see if ur getting good spark from all of them. If not, then it would be best to replace all(you should have two for the four cylinder & three for the six cylinder) of the coils. Then of course, replace all the wires & the plugs. If ur getting good spark, then check ur fuel injectors. If the number three is bad, then do yourself a favor & replace all of them at one time, not just the number three one as u will waste time & money in the long run just replacing the one now. And no, I've never had this problem. The cause though is just use. Parts wear out. Especially electrical components. Do not forget the di-electric grease either.
