If everything is within expected normal conditions, l guess they are built to last about 7 years or so.
If it was a 1980 Subaru it could last and be rebuilt when it fails. Newer cars are built to X specs, then is dump the motor,trans, frame, buy new.

Subarus last a long time, but really, a car is longevity is dependent on how it is taken care of. Proper and timely maintainance is pretty important. As long as you take care of things like oil changes properly, the EJ25 engine in the Legacy should last long. Subaru makes some of the most reliable cars right along with Honda and Toyota.
