l drive a Subaru Legacy. l think the rumor was started by people that were not used with the Boxer start-up sound on very cold winter mornings. There is a grain of truth to the statement, the Subaru boxer engine will sound, when you crank it, very unique. It may sound like a diesel for a bit but as long as you are using the right oil it wo not make any noise outside what is normal for any car engine.

If you're not used to the Subaru sound, it can be concerning to some people. The boxer motor has the exhaust ports pointed straight down at the ground so there is a little more echo. It is normal though. Also the ticking sound you hear when you shut off the engine is another thing people worry about at first but it too is normal.
