l understand that magazines rate the 0-60 of a normal WRX from anywhere between 5.9-6-5 seconds. What l wanna know is when they do the 0-60 tests, do they rev to high rpm is and then start into first? Or do they just do a nice and steady launch. l just wanted to see what kind of speed you can get without wrecking your tranny like a bunch of other people after launching at high rpms...

0-60 times are generally run the way a normal person would leave a stop sign...

However magazine people.. notably the people at Car & Driver, have been known to destroy cars while testing..

magazine reports do not ''launch'' the car or drop the clutch at high rpms
they will ease or slip the clutch in under strong acceleration the better the driver the better the times up untill the max performance of the car. its normal for a good driver to score 1-4 tenths less than print reviews & mfg/claims

you would not sacrafice the clutch on a high rpm launch to prevent bog but to prevent drive train shock & damage, clutch is r far cheaper than a new trans or center diff

Given that this car is a turbo four wheel drive, u do a high (but not max) rpm launch for the fastest 0-60.

This is due to two reasons.
1. You have to have the turbo spooled for adequate boost pressure.
2. Having 4 wheel drive u have plenty of grip.

Sadly, this is going to smoke ur clutch as u will have to let out slow to prevent a number of negative things:

1. Engine Bogging (not that much of an issue with this car, but it happens to a degree)
2. Drive train shock (exploding transmissions, shafts, & diffs != fun, well maybe if it is ur car & not mine.)
3. Excessive wheel spin. (too much spin & u get a bad launch, this also involves good accelerator pedal control as well)
4. Wheel hopping. You will load the suspension then exceed the limit of grip very quickly causing wheel hop unless u have a preloaded suspension. This leads to even more excessive wheel spin.

Real racing involves turns not just acceleration (top fuel not withstanding). If u r going to race or test ur 0-60, do it at a sanctioned event.

First, Launching is a rare reason that people break their WRX trannies. First gear is not weak, it is third because the shaft it is on flexes from the torque when u let off the clutch too aggressively. Learn the art of launching & it can be done with little to no harm (except the clutch). Basically come to a stop. Let out the clutch slowly till just millimeters before it engages. Rev to 4000 to 4500 to begin with & just let out the clutch quickly, not dropping it but just quickly as u floor the accelerator. Adjust the RPM is to find the right spot but no more than 5000 rpm's. l had plenty of launches on my stock gears & there is a kid locally who has been dragging his 07 at the local strip for two summers now without braking something. Launching can be abusive but not too bad if done properly. You need to know that most people who talk about braking their tranny do not tell the whole story. And the rest of them r just repeating what they heard so the story gets even more distorted. Lastly, l am not guaranteeing that u will not break anything so if u can not afford $1500 for replacement gears, u should not be doing things like this to the car. Just like modding ur car is safe if done right but if u can not afford $2000 for an engine replacement, u should not be modding. ''You have to pay to play.''
