l went into steven jory subaru in phoenix. l asked to test drive the wrx because l am considering buying it. l am 18 years old. they told me l couldnt test drive because l dont look like a potential buyer. they said if l can bring in a bank statement proving how much money l had then l could test drive it. l did not argue with the man, l simply told him that this is bullshit and major incovienice. he then threatned to kick my ass for swearing at him! this is an old man, prolly 60 years old, fat too. l asked for the GM to come out and he told me to go get him myself. of course he was in meeting. i do understand that kids would like to joyride the wrx is but, l really was going to buy one. but l will never buy one.

l took my Honda in for a blown head gasket to a 'subaru authorised repairer' - as they said no problem, we will do it. $1200 later l found it was leaking oil. Took it back, they said normal for this to happen for a short while
However it continued to happen so took it for a 2nd opinion to Honda who said they had put the head gasket in up-side-down. Queried the subaru dealer about this - said l was too late - l should have mentioned it inside 2 weeks of repair. They would not fix their mistake without charging me to do it!

While l will admit that the sales guy was rude & his actions uncalled for, l am sure u understand their position concerning the WRX. It is a hot little car & l am sure they have more than their share of folks who just want to take it for a spin while having no intention of buying one.
Next time be prepared to show that u r a serious buyer. It would even help to have an older adult with you.
While l understand why u r upset, l can also see their side in that they do not want mileage put on the cars (or risk someone wrecking one) by folks who just want to take the car for a ride.
If l were you, I'd go back to the dealership with all my documentation, make sure l get another sales person, buy the car, then look up the guy who gave u so much trouble & tell him he lost the sale by being so rude.

One reason l do not even think twice about buying another Subaru is that the service department have been rip offs when the car is out of warranty. The other is the lack of ground clearance, when l need the four wheel drive, l need that clearance (If l do not, l will drive my Miata). Sales is very little different from the service, in some parts of the country there is such a high demand for them that either u put up with it or buy something else. l will buy something else.

This is not just a Subaru dealership issue..
l am on my 5th car at 20 years old. Just recently purchased my first brand new car in July. When l walked in the dealership, the dealers pretty much ignored me. The first few dealers l walked up to blew me off & said they were busy. Finally one of the younger, more crook looking dealers came up & asked if l needed help. After telling him l was looking at a $24,000 car, he asked if my parents were around.. l looked at him like he was an idiot, & asked ''why would a 20 year old with a fulltime job for the past 3 years with a credit score of 790, need his parents to buy a car'' Then the guy never called back when l had questions or concerns, waiting over a month for my car to arrive. Best bet at a young age is work directly with the Sales manager.

Thats nothing! l am in my early 30 is & l went the Subaru dealership by my house(looking for a '07 Legacy) & we could not quite reach an agreeable price since they only had '08's. So l went into the city to Mid City Subaru & OMG l will never go back there! First l saw they had an ad for an 07 Legacy for 18,600, so l called & the floor manager tells me ''we r out of '07 is but l will make u the same deal on an '08'' & l took off in a hurry to get to the dealership. Now l had asked if they how many Legacy Special Editions they had before l went there & l was told they had 9. When l got there they had 1! It was a manual(which l did not want for my daily commute) & the floor manager then tells me its 21k! It was a total bait & switch in my opinion, & so l left. Luckily the dealership close to my house called me & said if l buy it today they would sell it to me at a price l wanted. Moral of the story..its not the cars fault the dealer was an arsehole! l love my new subaru! This car rocks!
Side note - Mazda told me that l could not drive the Speed3 or Speed6 because ''you r not aserious customer''. The funny part is my dad was there cause he wanted to check it out too..after that we decided never to do business with that delaership or the other ones owned by the same guy(the pontiac dealer is owned by the same guy & the sales team lied to me to get me in the door).
This is why l think its time for America to deal directly with the manufactor & say F u to the dealers!!!!

Look, l went to a Subaru dealer here in Long Beach, CA and they let me test drive it. l am 19 years old. What you have to do is act serious, tell them '' l am going to buy the car and l need to feel it.'' That worked for me. l have low credit. Plus, if they looked at you they thought here comes another teen. NEVER ask to test drive a WRX or STI. They will never let you because they do not want excess miles.

Hey, l liked all the stories here, l am an older guy about 2x youre ages & l can relate to what u all r saying. l was 20 when l went to get my new car & faced some of the same problems. You r right, they tend to ignore younger people because they think u do not have money or credit. Sometimes girls get a little more attention especially if they r attractive. The think that they can screw them over by selling them the car overpriced or sell them a piece of junk or even get into their panties. l was 20 yrs old, college graduate, started out as a chief technologist at a large lab. l could fcking buy a mbenz if l wanted to. Cash mind you. Here r a few tips to use from an experienced individual. First of all if u r being ignored, u have the right to be cocky, you have the money & u r buying the product. Car salesman r basically bottom feeding, blood suckers, very few of them r honest, & far less are educated. Most r not even familiar with the cars they are selling yet alone even know anything about automobiles period. It does not take long to make them look like an ass without verbal abuse. If they r ignoring me, l walk up to someone & ask (Are they selling cars in this place) that gets their attention, l start by talking about a specific car that l am interested. Do ur homework before u look, that way u know about the car and the avg selling price. 9 times out of 10 with just a little research u will know more than that dumb sob. During the conversation they would often try to determine what you do for a living. If l am at a MB dealer or Porsche I often ask them if they drive one of these cars, that usually wakes them up to the fact that u r the badass buying this mothfker & that is how ur dumb ass makes $$$. l throw around other dealers that l have been to, particular ones that do not have the car, to show them that l have been looking & nobody has shti. Of course they want to be better, so they will come up with something. This also gives them the impression that u know what the car costs. They will often ask if u r looking to buy a car now, of course the answer is yes! In my case l am always looking to buy a car, l am a car guy & If l see something l like & the price is right l buy. l collect. For the one car buyer, this still gets u in the serious seat. Car dealers look at what u drive up in & try to figure out ur income. Most r too stupid to get this information in a sophisticated way. l can tell if a guy can lay down the bucks if he drives up on a Porsche lot in a work truck with denims & a T shirt. l am used to talking with intelligent people with classy taste daily. These assholes r middle to lower income , most with substance abuse & health problems secondary to shabby lifestyles. If u do not get what u want WALK! If u have the money u can buy from anybody. And no l would not go back & buy a car from a lousy dealership just to prove l have the money & they lost the sale. l buy the car from the other dealer & come back. I've done this numerous times. l show up with a friend looking for a car driving my new car up there. That's how u do it~~And Remember: They make money selling cars, u do not make money buying them! l hope this help most of you!

the Subaru/Kia Dealer l went to in north texas would not let me drive because l was not 21 yet (insurance issues) just like u can not rent an exotic car unless ur 25. so l looked around. most of the guys were very nice & cool (i drove up in my 96 Impreza Coupe so they loved it) there where 3 salesmen that where stupid & pissed me off when l was leaving, but l found out later that at the time the Subaru part of the dealership had been bought & was going to be moved so at the time they were probably about to lose there jobs

l HAVE SEEN THIS BEFORE AND THE DEALER HAS BEEN HURT BY THE WAY THAT THEY TREAT SOME CUSTOMERS.
IT DOESN'T MAKE A DIFFERENCE IF YOU ARE 18 OR 80, IF YOU WANT TO TEST DRIVE A VEHICLE THE SALESPERSON WILL GO WITH YOU SO THERE REALLY IS NO PROBLEM.
AS FOR GETTING MAD l UNDERSTAND YOU FRUSTRATION BUT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER JUST TO STAY COOL.
YOU SHOULD CONTACT THE VEHICLES MANUFACTURE AND SPEAK TO THE CUSTOMERS SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND TELL THEM WHAT HAPPENED.
THEY WILL ASK YOU IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO FILE A REPORT AGAINST THE DEALERSHIP AND YOU TELL THEM YES.
THE DEALERSHIP WILL HAVE TO RESPOND BACK BECAUSE THEY DO NOT WANT THIS ON THEIR RECORD THAT STATES THAT A CUSTOMER WAS NOT SATISFIED.
ONE OF MY CUSTOMERS SONS WENT INTO A CHEVY DEALERSHIP AND WANTED TO BUY A NEW CORVETTE A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO AND ALSO WANTED TO TEST DRIVE IT AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO HIM.
THE ONLY THING DIFFERENT WAS HE HAD THE MONEY BECAUSE HIS FATHER WAS WEALTHY AND THE SON WENT TO A DIFFERENT DEALERSHIP AND BOUGHT THE VEHICLE.
TO MAKE THINGS WORST HE DROVE IT TO THE FIRST DEALERSHIP THAT TREATED HIM BAD AND SPOKE TO THE GENERAL MANAGER AND THE SALESMAN WAS FIRED ON THE SPOT.
REMEMBER, NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER.

Car dealers r slime. More often than not, they will lie to ur face. Unfortunately, this is a fact of life that u will have to get used to, just like the rest of us. Read the Edmunds.com article by a journalist that went undercover at a car dealership. On the other hand, u may not want to be so quick to by a hot car like a WRX. You will pay a fortune in insurance & will probably pick up more than a few traffic tickets. It may be hard to see this now, but save ur money for something really important. Get the hot car when u need a mid-life-crisis fix.
