Like what on say a 98 legacy can be expected to go first? what would then be the expected chain of parts to begin failing after ward

(ex. radiator 100k miles
transmission 200k miles
engine 250k miles)

that sort of thing, anyone that closely familiar with subarus?

l highly suggest checking out consumerreports.org for their review on this particular vehicle. l always check with them before any purchase.

not really anything more than any other car would have probably less on that one also, those are really good cars,if one has been well maintained ,it should last well beyond the 200 k mark before it ever starts to give any problems even if it does then, the guy that helped me re-model our old house drives one with over 300 k on it,and its still going real good, take care of it and it will last, good luck with it.

If you keep up the maintenance on them, you should not have any major problems for a long time. Make sure the timing belt is changed at the proper interval and do not neglect any of the fluids. Follow the maintenance recommendations in the owner is manual and you should get 250k or more out of the car easy.

l agree with Dodgeman. These are very good cars. I've never owned one but l know quite afew people who do or have owned them. It is like talikng to a Toyota owner. Most Subie owners are repeat buyers.

l think subarus r well engineered, well built cars & for the most part reliability is determined by maintenance & driving habits. A meticulously maintained car that is not abused (and that does not live in the snowbelt) should have no problem lasting over 200k miles with nothing more than regular maintenance

l highly recommend avoiding used cars that have r modified or show signes of having once been modified. this is more of an issue when shopping for turbocharged models. Also, pay special attention to the clutch & transmission since these will be sure giveaways of hard use. Try to drive the car when it is cold (ie left overnight). If the clutch chatters (car will shake) when u slip it with a little bit of throttle when starting from a standstill, or if the clutch pedal is hard to press in, those r signs of a car that has been driven hard.

Other common things to look out for r worn CV boots (especially the front passenger side for turbo cars (that is the side closest to the downpipe, & is most likely to fail from the heat), noisy AC belt pulley (cheap to fix, so it is a sign of neglect if it is not fixed).

Lastly, check the dipstick of the car. Subaru motors use a bit more oil than other cars, & diligent owners will keep the oil topped up, & negligent owners will drive the car with the oil level at or below the fill mark

i have a subaru & l like it a lot. l have found it to be very reliable & great performance for the price. if possible u should try to look for a non modified turbocharged model. it is hard to find a good example on the used market, but it is well worth it. took me over a year of looking to find my wrx but it was worth it ! good luck with ur search.

your oxygen sensor will fail, nzd retail 2-300 just for a new sensor Plus labour, if you service it regulary itll be good but you will also need to do your plugs at spme stage, there usually platinum plugs an cos 30 odd each so theres 120 plus there not nice to change so expect at least an hours labour for just the plugs, thats if the tech is competent!

l have a '98 legacy outback. i'm just beginning to have some minor problems with it, but i'm hoping it is just maintenance issues (i put off a couple a bit too long, i'm a bad owner!)
it has 165,000 mi on it (and has been in 3 wrecks)
the radiator had to be replaced--only because of the wrecks.
everything else i've ever done to it was all just maintenance (changing fluids, filters, the occassional belt, etc.)
i LOVE my car!!! it is very reliable (running a bit rough right now, but never dies or stalls on me!)
