Napa is being a b*tch because at first they said they had 1 rebuilt axle for my car, a 1992 Subaru SVX - probably the rarest car in existence today, anyway then they said they did not have it and then said there might be a chance that some of the newer cv axles might be compatible - a ''50/50'' chance, whatever that means.

A local dealer around here quoted a price of $550.xx new...but at this point I am not sure what to do...

You do not need to get a new half-shaft, any more than you need a new alternator or a new starter. Remanufactured units typically sell for about $120

l would check around. l know MWE sells rebuilt Subaru axles now, if you want better quality than NAPA http://ccrengines.com/mwe/index.html If they do not have one they will probably rebuild the one you have. The dealerships will rob you, l can usually find the same parts for my Outback online now for nearly half the price.

There r VERY FEW parts used on an SVX which r compatible with other Subaru models. Go to the SVX World Network site for more info on ur car. All the information u could possibly want about the SVX is available, including knowledgeable members with helpful advice.

BTW, did the dealer-quoted price include installation? You can get an axle at Advance Auto Parts for about $70.00, & any competent Subaru mechanic can install it (if they have a lift) in a couple of hours. If they r not familiar with the SVX, check out the Network website for installation advice & how-to's.

There r also several members who have their own shops, if u want to be SURE u have a competent SVX mechanic.
