It is a tricky thing to bet on when a car will break. Can you afford to loose that bet? If you do, you are talking a new engine. $3000 seems a bit high to fix a head gasket. That is the price of a brand new crate motor from the factory. The Gasket itself is about a $10 to $20 dollar part and at the most a 3 hour job. I'd would ask for a second opinion on what needs to be fixed and get a itemized list.

Head gasket problems only cause serious trouble in pre-1999 2.5L engines, where leaks r internal. With 1999-2002 engines, Subaru recommends adding a conditioner to the cooling system to prevent leaks & correct existing ones. Strangely, 2003 & later engines were not mentioned because they were supposedly not prone to leaks. In any case, it seems to me that $3000 is far, far too expensive to fix it.

$3000 is too much for a fix. Get a second estimate and diagnosis from someone else. If your car has less than 60,000 miles, then your car is still under warranty.

If it does have a bad head gasket, it should cost less than $2000 to fix.

A head gasket leak is a serious problem. You need to get it looked at by another dealer or mechanic immediately.

check dealer for open recalls , those models had recall for head gasket failure.
