A turbo is a compression device driven by the exhaust side of the engine. The resulting spin is carried over to the intake side which produces boost to the cylinder(s). The result is a general increase in HP/Torque. Excess pressure is bled off through the wastegate.

A turbo looks sort of like two metal snails glued together. One of these ''snails'' sits in the exhaust & contains a turbine spun by the exhaust gases. The turbine turns a similar device on the other side, known as the compressor. The compressor is like a fan on steroids that crams a lot more air (which can be more than twice as much air as the engine could suck in on its own) into the engine is intake. The extra air lets the engine burn more fuel to make more power.
