What make the 2006 wrx Sti have 300 hp while the regular wrx only has around 260 even though they are both turbo charged. Can anyone tell me the diferences?

My guess is the Subaru Impreza WRX ST l has a sport tuned suspension as well as a lighter body . The ST l also has numerous amounts of technology and computers in it. and for 15,000 dollers more then the plain WRX l guess 40 horses should be included.

depands. u going to mod the car or keep it stock. the sti is way cheaper for insurace. the car is the same body & weight. the sti has a 6 speed not a 5. it has alittle better shocks. both cars have brembo brakes but r painted brembo on the sti. the wing is only a few hundred bucks. the turbo on the wrx is small & restricted but u can change it to a 39 like the sti for about $200. if it were me l would get the wrx & add $3000 in parts & have a faster car. u should look at the wrx tr as well even less parts & way less money.

The differences between a WRX & STi:
-Better brakes on STi. The Brembos found on the STi r larger & dissipate heat quicker.
-Better wheel/tire package on the STi. 17'' BBS rims with performance oriented tires compared to the WRX is 16'' Subaru branded Enkei rims & all seasons.
-Different body panels. Larger hood scoop, larger rear wing, different sideskirts.
-Engine. VF39 turbo vs TD04 for WRX, different intake manifold, larger TMIC, AVCS, stronger internals, different camshaft. STi produces 300 hp while WRX produces 230.
-Transmission. 6 speed vs 5 speed, hardened mounts for both tranny & engine. Also, auto is not available for STi.
-Interior. ''Special'' STi interior with blue inlays.
-Suspension. Upgraded suspension on STi.
There is other differences between the two as well, as the catback on the STi is different & other random touches. l think I've touched on most of the important differences though.

For above, the WRX & STi weigh the same. And the STi is not cheaper to insure.

You can make a WRX faster than a STi for the price, but u can not make it better for the same price. There is a huge difference there. Trust me l know. l had this same misconception when l bought my WRX. You get quite a bit for that $6000 difference in sticker price between the two, & u have a better starting platform for future mods. The gap has been narrowed with the 06-07 WRXs since they now have the 2.5L, but it is still quite a large gap. But then if the STi is looks do not do it for u & you're going to swap everything out anyways, then u probably might consider a WRX. But if u plan to do limited modifications or leave it stock, then get the STi.

Are you in the U.S.? Because l do not think the WRX has 260hp in North American soil. l have an 07 WRX and it is rated at 226hp l think. Anyway, the first person has the best answer for your question.

the fact that the ST l is tuned by ST l both inside and out. And has the sufisicated DCCD system with it. The WRX is a basic sports car version of the ST l which tuners can toy around with it or just a economic version of the STI

The ST l is a sportier version of the WRX. It has a bigger engine.

Wow guys, all this person wanted to know was why the STi makes more power. Thats it. Someone did answer that, but it was in the middle of a huge description of a bunch of other things.
Simple answer, bigger turbo.
