l have a 1999 Subaru Legacy and live in upstate NY. l bought the car used, last year with 60k miles on it now the car has about 75,000 miles on it. The car is an automatic, and sometimes l notice when l apply pressure to the gas (l do it on purpose to get the tranny to upshift) the response to shift is slow and when the gear shifts my car lurches. l also must mention l notice this the most when climbing hills or when the car is still cold, but it has happen at other times.

About 2 months ago my mechanic noticed that my tranny fluid filter was rusted out and he drained the tranny and replaced the fluid, and the filter.

Please tell me l do not need a new transmission!!!

l own a repair shop,and you should not need a new tranny for this car ,it may need the fluid changed again in it though,sometimes you have to change it twice to get all the junk out of it,when l get one like that l usually change it,and have the customer drive it a week,and then bring It back and we change it again,this is very helpful in getting all the junk in it cleaned out,id try that before l did anything else to it,good luck,i hope this help,s.

Your shift bands r worn & the pump is now getting bad from this damage.It would be in ur best interest as far as cost to call a salvage yard & purchase a good used transmission.In the case of automatic transmissions,having the existing trans rebuilt is both costly & almost always a never ending ordeal.Meaning rebuilt transmissions r almost never right & they will have it more often than u will.
Brand new trans is way too costly & from Subaru.who knows when u will actually receive it.They r horrible on parts stock.
A good used one should cost around $450.00, maybe less but close to it.The labor fluids,etc will cost another $800.00. Unless u feel mechanically inclined to do that part yourself.
All in all its not going to be super cheap but at least u will be out of it for a price that is worth doing to get it back on the road & dependable.
Go to car-part.com. Its a parts data base for the whole U.S.A where u can type in ur state & surrounding areas & the vehicle info to search for parts available & what price they want for them. Also tells u the mileage & condition.

If the tranny filter was rusted on that tells that the previous owner did not change the fluid which should of been done every 30,000 miles. Since the tranny fluid has been replaced and the problem persists see if you can have it rebuilt or get one from a wrecker.
Sorry but that is what it sounds like

has anyone checked the transmission modulator valve? pull the line running to it if you see fluid in the line or any comes out replace it. this is a vacuum port and shouldnt have any fluid in it. my dad taught me that and l had to change the one on my nieces old pos mustang she limped to college(84 4cylinder model what a clunker!!!!)>
