It the price is right, go for it. Most Subarus go 200,000+ miles. There is a reason you do not see many of them used, the owners love them.

Most modern automobiles r designed well, so that, with proper maintenance, they can last a very long time. The big problem with cars such as the STi is that the people who own them tend to drive them. Hard. Think about the STIs & Evos u see on the streets. Usually the people behind the wheel r thrashing the car as if they r in a time trial as opposed to commuting to work. If, however, the seller has not abused the vehicle, & can provide proof that the vehicle was maintained, l would say u should be OK.

For more detailed data as to the quality of the car, check out long-term reviews by auto magazines such as Car & Driver, or Road & Track, both of which have online archives where u can read their summaries of long-term ownership.

Are u in the US? If so, there is no such car.

There is a WRX, but not a WRX STI. (that was, IIRC, 04 & later)

I'd be pretty skeptical about a STI-swapped WRX. That is the only way you'd have such a thing in the US, BTW.

As for the regular WRX, it is a good, relatively reliable car, but most of them have been driven hard, & a lot of them have been owned by morons. You want maintenance records, u want it inspected by a mechanic, & u want few if any mods, & any mods should be well done with quality parts.

l dont know where the first chick is getting her info but l have 3 friends that bought WRX is all around 5 years ago and every single one of them has either traded it in or bought a different car because they are so unreliable!! If you had some money to spend look into a Toyota Supra- they will easily make it to 300,000 miles and they are way faster than an STI.

Like the other person said there is NO us version of a ST l in 2002. They were introduced in 2004. Make sure it REALLY has the ST l motor, not the regular WRX motor. If it was swapped, you may have problems. Usually because they did the swap for a reason (gain more power) when they do get more power they like to beat on it and push it. causing wear issues pre-maturely

A 2002 USDM (United States Vehicle) did not come in an STi version. The US WRX has a 2.0L DOHC turbocharged 4-cylinder.

The 2004 model year was the first release of the STi in the US. That has a 2.5L DOHC turbocharged engine, that also has ACVS (Active Camshaft Timing).

From my experience at the dealership, the WRX is & STi is that r driven by younger people r normally driven pretty harshly. Maintenance is usually paid for by thier parents as they (the kids) do not have money to pay for it.

I've seen the 2.0L WRX is around with over 150,000 on them, & they r still running good.

The above comment about reliability is not true, & is more of an issue of breakage due to severe abuse.
