You want the biggest turbo you can get, and a huge exhaust pipe (at least 3'' all the way from front to back)

l think a vf39 turbo from a 05 sti is the best option.
A friend of mine did the switch and the results were perfect.
If you change your exhaust and your intake (cold air, not a short ram) and if you can afford to put in a methanol injection system and get it tuned by a good tuner, your car will be pretty quick

l would sugest a T3/T4 hybrid, it will spool quick and also build boost up to about 7000 RPM. get a good blow-off valve and you will be ok. the ST l turbo is good as well but l think the T3/T4 comes on stronger. you will love the feel of a turbo, you keep your gas milage as well if you keep out of the pedal!

Those r some of the most inaccurate l have ever seen. First of all, if u have $2K to spend, u r not going to be able to afford ''the biggest turbo'' & its supporting modifications. This would include T3/T4 turbos, which r not bolt-ons to the WRX, & thus would cost close to $5000 for custom fabrication or kit.

What l would recommend for ur budget is a turboback exhaust, an uppipe, & engine management. This gives u around 300-305 horsepower, fast & smooth torque, & a lot of area under the power curve.

If u r going to upgrade the turbo, u have a lot of choices. A good affordable & effective bolt-on turbo is the Mitsubishi TD05-16G (Super 16 version). (The VF39 STi turbo is to be avoided as many of them develop cracked compressor housings, & since the VF34 is superior.)

When upgrading the turbo u will need a turboback exhaust, uppipe, & u will also need an upgraded fuel pump & injectors, & custom dynotuning.

Two thousand is not enough to perfom a turbo upgrade on a stock wrx.

You have enough in ur budget for an uppipe/downpipe/cat-back, Engine management & custom tune.

For a turbo upgrade u would need the above plus injectors (200+), the turbo itself (400 {vf39 used}, 650 {16g}, 750 {18g}) upgraded tmic (400 {sti takeoff}, 600+ {aftermarket} , fuel pump (80) plus custom tune (300-500). Not including labor & miscellaous items (gaskets, tools, etc).
peplid - a vf39 is a good choice for budget minded people who do not mind a little spool loss for the hairline crack most have. But yes, l do agree that the prior do not have a clue what their talking about.
