l have a 2000 Subaru Outback with an automatic trany. The car has suddenly developed an intermittent starter problem ever since the temperatures here in CT have dropped to winter levels. Most cold morning it takes 3 to 4 tries to get the starter to turn over. The first three tries the starter will make a clanking sound as if the starter gear is engaging, but it will not turn over the engine. On the 4th or 5th try the starter will engage and turn the engine over till it starts. There are no problems with the electrical system and once the car starts there are no issues.

Is this a common problem for some Subaru Outback’s or is my starter on the way out?

Common problem. Get your alternator replaced, and it wouldnt kill you to change your h20 pump and timing belt too, oh and learn how to take care of your car pal.

The alternator has nothing to do with starting the engine, although it may not be charging ur battery fully when u drive the car. If u suspect the alternator, get it tested at Checker, AutoZone, Napa, Pep Boys etc. They will d it for free. My guess is that you've probably got a bad cable connection to one of the battery posts or the starter terminal. If u can, remove the cable ends, clean them, & the problem should be resolved. If not, u might have a weak battery that is not taking a charge (cold weather exacerbates the problem), or u might have a starter solenoid that is about to croak. You might also be driving such short distances, with frequent engine starts, that ur battery just does not have time to charge up. That is a common city driving problem & its worse in cold weather or really hot weather.

l think that the Trany is the problem. They are always out late living their ''alternative'' lifestyle.
It is really tough to get then up in the morning as you have discovered.
The do make good Tango partners though.
