l did not buy one, but the only reason my cousin bought one was because of the highest safety rating it had & the fact it was a SUV with still good gas mileage. Those r the pros, obviously.
Cons, it seems to me when l drive it that the steering is a little out of alignment after like 6 years or so. When l go over bumps too it seems like l lose control a little bit on the highway. My mom does not seem to notice it, nor does my cousin, but everything is checked up on the car & every tune up made or something like that. Maybe l am just too picky & l like my Toyota Highlander better. The subaru forrester is still a great SUV tho. They placed the cup holders in front of the vents, which annoys me tho. If they changed that in newer models, well yay for that!
Take a test drive, see if u like it.

l have had my Subaru Imprezza for 5 years. l always wanted a Subaru. They were a unique little car when l was growing up & seemed to be owned by smart, practical people who were also mildly eccentric. The owners wanted to be different but could not bring themselves to be overtly materialistic & buy an expensive foreign car. These were cars with the engine of a Porche that could go through snow.
One of the things l noticed about Subarus before l bought mine is that there were a lot of old ones on the road. People bond with these little quirky cars & want to run them to the ground rather than trade them in. While their engine quality is probably not as good as say a Nissan is or Toyota's, these r not cars that will wear out. l take mine in for service as recommended & have had no problems getting to 100K. l expect Toshi (the name of my car) to last me another 80-100K or so.
The new Imprezzas r pretty snazzy ( l want a blue sport wagon!!!), but the company itself has a reputation of being a little boring when it comes to design. When l bought mine l was warned that the company had a bad reputation for service & could go through cycles of poor quality, but l have had no problem servicing the car. The most expensive service l have had thus far was at 82,000 when l needed to replace a wheel bearing & both front brakes.
As for cons, all wheel drive is a gas suck. My subaru gets probably 20-23 miles per the gallon. While this is good compared to a Hummer, it is not good compared with other compact cars. l also think some of the aftermarket parts l had installed at the dealer were not of the best quality. Even when l bought the car, the options that were offered seemed outdated. That may have changed.

My Subaru keeps me humble. Any time l think l know what is what, something screws up on my '98 Forester, & l stand corrected. Apparently, they (the '98 Forester) can sometimes have issues with the head gaskets. Of course, it took three separate trips to the mechanic to figure that little nugget out! Plus, the engine is a fairly unique little guy, & a lot of things seem to hide from yours truly. It could be that l am an idiot, also. l have several friends with other makes of Subarus, & they absolutely love theirs! Since this is my fourth vehicle in a row that has treated me poorly, maybe it is just me.

l have a 96 Legacy wagon. l like it because no other car has such a combination of virtues all in one package:
-A world-class AWD system (it speaks for itself) -Sports sedan handling-- l have not driven that many other cars, but still, the only one l did drive with better steering was a 2007 Legacy -Suspension--firm enough to avoid carsickness, supple enough to be comfortable on rough roads & excellent load-carrying characteristics -Interior--not particularly classy, but well-made, roomy & practical -Exterior--Understated & aging gracefully. & the windows provide incredible visibility -Reliability--The car owes nothing-- l can count on one hand the number of unscheduled garage visits over 12 years
Is it perfect? No--it is not all that quiet, the engine is a tad rough at low rpm & some controls & features r dated. And like any 12 year-old car in a harsh climate, it is had age- & rust-related repairs in recent years. But its service over 230,000 km (143,000 miles) has put many newer cars to shame & l hope to keep it until well over 300,000 km.
The car was bought by my parents in back '96 almost entirely because its AWD system. Also, the 95-99 Legacy was a big leap forward for Subaru in terms of overall refinement, as my parents did not buy a Subaru when they checked them out in '94. However, the car has proven over time that it has more than just an AWD system working in its favour.

l decided against it because of the AWD, l dont like it.
However, l still came very close because looking at equilavent cars (Imprezza wagon vs PT Cruiser, Matrix, Vibe), the Imprezza was the best value. It had the best crash ratings (different than safety ratings), best standard features by far, option of a short throw shifter from them instead of having to do it myself (only like $250, so well worth the cost for a quality part), after market support (our dealer even has the only Dyno in the area), reliability, & out of the 6 dealerships they were only ones that didnt jack up the price for no reason.
In the end, l live in an area that never gets snow or ice so l didnt want an AWD drivetrain to add weight, restrict power to the wheels, & hurt my turning radius.

AWD - l live in New England & snow happens every winter. l remember Christmas Eve 4 years ago. We had a blizzard & l was on the highway coming home from my Uncle is house on the highway passing the plows, doing 50 MPH, & driving as if the 4 inches of snow were not even there.
Reliability - l bought my '02 WRX brand new, l have over 75k miles on it & the worst problem I've had is a battery dying.
Looks - l love my bugeye WRX, but Subaru is on the ball with cosmetic changes to their cars. They keep it fresh & new almost every year, but yet u can go from an '02 to an '07 & feel like you're driving YOUR car.
Customization - Not quite an Accord but there r plenty of things u can do to a Subaru.
