i'm doing a marketing project, and l have a question for you guys.
who would you consider a competition for the wrx sti. not only proformence but in general.
for example:
i would put the honda civic, nissan sentra, toyo corrola, mazda 3. in one category.
so where would you put the wrx sti?

evo
turbo eclipse
nissan skyline

The WRX ST l ranks up with the Mitsubish Evolution for sure.

Lancer Evolution
Eclipse Spider
NOT A NISSAN SKYLINE or GT-R - has too much power and way out of price range. it would blow most supercars out of the water.
Honda Civic SI
Mazda Rx7 or 8 probably

Mitsubishi EVO, Nissan 350z, BMW 335i, VW golf R32, mazda RX8, pontiac GTO (when they made them), Mazdaspeed 3 & mazdaspeed 6, & a few others.

They all appeal to young people that want practical, fast cars. The EVO is by far its closest competitor, with the others varying in crowd a bit. In the strictest sense, most people looking to buy an STi r pretty much only looking at EVOs also, & r looking for something very moddable, fast, & track ready.

other people in this thread r morons. The Civic is a family car, the RX7 has been out of production for 10 years, the skyline was never even sold in america (and its a way more expensive car), turbo eclipses havent been around for a while either (and the current eclipse is in a different price bracket). etc, etc.

The only direct competition, like has been said, is the Mitsu Evo. You could argue that a Mustang GT has a similar performance to price ratio, but really the Evo and ST l are in a class all their own: street legal rally cars.
