why does my subaru legacy have flat spots before the turbo's come in and is there a cure for this problem

It,s called turbo lag and all turbo vehicles have it. The turbo is a small fan that does not run all the time and when it does kick in it takes it a little bit to get up to speed and that is why there is a brief lag.

Have you had the car serviced lately, perhaps put on a rolling-road. Actuator weak.. clogged air filter, bad plugs. is it just turbo-lag? Get it examined by someone who knows about an engine in this state of tune.

a few things U can do, fit a smaller turbo with more blades, ie a dual, or quad turbo, if will give the same amount of boost if not more, but will decrease the lag.

the other think U can do which is more popular is to fit a dump value this will bypass the turbos waste gate, so that the turbo never loses speed, so the boost power is always there, so no lag

all turbod engines have a flat spot which is known as turbo lag it is the time that the turbo needs to spool up as it is driven by exaust gas which is produced by the engine there is no cut & dry cure that is really realistic for a legacy but here r a few u can get a new engine management system that has anti lag programmed into it which injects raw fuel into the exhaust tract & ignites in the exhaust & turbo eliminating some spool up time (this is the flames & bangs that u see coming out of the back of turbod rally cars) next is fitting a small turbo alongside ur existing turbo this will spool up ur turbo faster but u still get lag
another cure is buy a car with a supercharger as these provide boost but with no lag as they r chain/belt driven

its called turbo lag, and the only way l know of getting past it is by fitting Nitrous oxide.

or bin the whole thing, and fit a supercharger.

Turbo lag

Typical turbo lag for the pressure to buildup. This is normal. Some cars has shorter lag. Go ask a local tuner for upgrades.

this could be fuel ?
do u use high octane as these were made for that kind of petrol .
try sticking a octane product in with ur petrol about a tenner from halfords , get the one for road use & see if it makes any difference to the performance .
it could also be that ur fuel pump is not working that well as it must be fuel not going through straight away to get the turbo going .
what rev does the turbo cut in as perhaps this needs changing too .

Turbo lag is all part of the adventure.Use a lower gear keep the revs up and you wo not notice any lag.
