The 99 outback had a 2.5 litre dual overhead cam motor & is all wheel drive. The engines were very good, with 2 exceptions. They do need headgaskets when they reach around 100k miles & they do get a piston knock. The piston knock has never caused any failures, that l have seen, just a little noisey. l just sold my 97 with the same motor & 186k miles on it,original pistons but new headgaskets.

They ride nice & handle great on wet & snowy roads. The original tires were michelin xw4's. What a great tire for that car.Not unusual to get 80k miles out of them. It is imperitive to keep al 4 tires the same manufacture & outer diameter. In other words if ur tires r half worn & u damage & need to replace one,you ned to replace all 4.The AWD is very sensitive to tire diameters being even 1/2 inch difference.

The 99 was a great car,and l wouldnt hesitate to buy one even if it had high mileage.Good luck with ur search.

If the Subaru has had reasonable service work then it should make you a dependable ride.

l bought a 1996 Subaru Outback wagon. It is GREAT. The best car l ever owned. The all wheel drive is fantastic in the snow. It is a top quality car---nothing ever goes wrong with it. l still have it & will keep it until it dies. My wife liked it so much she traded in her Dodge 4 X 4 truck in 2000 for a brand new 2000 Subaru Outback sedan. She still has it. Both of these cars r outstanding. l do not think l will ever buy a car other than a Subaru--very satisfied---best cars I've ever owned. (Answered by Jenny is dad).

subaru vehicles especially after the 2000 model year are practically bullett proof mechanically

well maintained subarus can run up to 300,000 miles easily but things like seats, dashboard etc WILL show their age though.

but on a cold winter day when you turn the key that vehicle will turn on and run well.
